Objectives - To share practical experiences and knowledge gained from implementing inclusive landscape approaches to effectively reduce risks and impacts of wildfires in tropical landscapes. Target audience - Professionals and practitioners and policy makers working on wildfire prevention and management in the fields of forestry, land management, and disaster risk reduction in the tropics. This event aims to share practical experiences from the field of using inclusive landscape approaches in the tropics to reduce the risks and impacts of wildfires. The event will offer two learning channels: (i) a South-South experience exchange and networking opportunity, allowing tropical countries to share their experiences and best practices, and (ii) an opportunity for the Global North to learn about inclusive and integrated management approaches in tropical countries, which are often based on traditional knowledge and locally owned solutions. By providing these learning channels, the event will promote cross-regional knowledge sharing and encourage the adoption of sustainable and effective wildfire management practices worldwide. It builds on successful implementation of the Fire-smart landscape governance programme by Tropenbos International and its partners in five countries. The recently published compendium, ‘Towards fire-smart landscapes’, with 25 articles from across the tropics serves as a key resource for this event. The session will begin with an opening statement from the chair and co-chair, setting the context for the discussion and before each panellist shares their experiences on effective stakeholder engagement in developing and implementing fire prevention and management plans. The floor will then be open for those present (or following online) to raise questions and introduce their own initiatives, experiences, examples and approaches. The focus of discussions will be on identify common considerations and lessons regarding how to ensure full stakeholder engagement at all levels and throughout of fire prevention and management planning that then can be upscale to a national or regional level. At the end of the event, the English and Spanish versions of ‘Towards fire-smart landscapes’ will be formally launched. The event is closely connected and complementary to the Tropenbos booth at the conference.
