Details

In Southeast Asia, forest and peatland fires have caused havoc in the past. Peatland fires in particular have been the main culprits of haze pollution events in the region. With peatland covering 23 Mha, representing approximately 40% of the worlds’ known tropical peatlands and roughly 6% of the entire global peatland resource[1], peatland ecosystems have been at the centre of ASEAN policies as well as at national level in Indonesia and Malaysia which hold the greatest peatland area in the region. It is estimated that ASEAN peatlands store 14% of carbon stored in global peatlands[2]. In this workshop the ASEAN region will be presented and you will be introduced to the and challenges the region deals with related to peatland fire. Best practices on fire management will be presented by Indonesia and Malaysia as examples from the region. Future collaboration and partnerships that can support the region transform the challenges into opportunities will be welcome.
