Biography

Head of Knowledge and Innovation at the Agency for Integrated Rural Fire Management (AGIF), since March 2020, he is responsible, for the execution of r&d projects that introduce knowledge and best practices into operations and for the implementation of the Interoperability Platform of the Integrated Management System for Rural Fires, that will link the data of public and private entities, ensuring that information is more easily shared, updated and gathered, and thereby providing a consolidated global view of processes and activities of the entire value chain (from planning to post-fire). He has been connected to the energy sector throughout his career, starting in the field of energy management. He then carried out activities within the strategic planning of infrastructure development, network modeling and preparation of technical documentation. Since 2016 he has developed his activity in the area of innovation management, having been responsible for the implementation and management of the Research, Development and Innovation Management System at a major Portuguese utility, as well as for the management of several innovation projects. Arlindo holds a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering (specialization in thermal energy) and a Master's degree in Innovation and Technological Entrepreneurship, both from the University of Porto. Currently he is completing a post-graduation programme in Digital Business at Porto Business School.

Biography

Sandra Valente is a senior research at ForestWISE COLAB. She holds a European Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences and Engineering (UA, 2013) and MSc in Sociology: Local Policies and Decentralization (UC, 2008). As coordinator of the workline 4: ‘People and Policies’, she has been dedicated to research and knowledge transfer in the areas of social perceptions of forest and fire, stakeholder engagement and management, and public policies impact assessment. In the last 20 years, worked at CESAM – Centre for Environment and Marine Studies (UA), having participated in more than 20 European and national projects, published more than 20 articles in international journals and more than 100 papers in conferences and scientific events, in expertise areas linked to social perceptions of the environment and natural risks and public participation in the management of natural resources and forest management.

Biography

Over a period of more than 40 years, Gary Morgan has made many significant contributions to the management of forests and forest fires at the state, national and international levels.‍ For 9 years, he was Victoria’s Chief Fire Officer for public lands before becoming CEO, for 7 years, of the Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre. He remains very active in two national organisations. The Forest Fire Management Group, and Forestry Australia’s Forest Fire Management Committee which he is the Chairperson. He is also the Chairperson for the Government of Victoria’s Ministerial Advisory Committee on wildland fire risk.‍ In 2000, Gary arranged the first deployment of Australian and New Zealand firefighters to the USA then initiated the development of the formal forest firefighting support agreements between fire agencies in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA.‍ In 2005, he participated in drafting of the United Nations FAO’s Fire Management Voluntary Guidelines then became a member of the FAO Fire Management Actions Alliance Advisory Group.‍ He was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM), in 2018, for his significant service to the community through fire response organisations, and to forest and fire research, and management.

Elena Hernández Paredes

Biography

Forestry engineer. Service manager at the Wildfire Management Service of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge of Spain since 2009. Responsible for national prevention, preparedness and suppression strategies and actions along with international affairs and relationships. At national level, she leads the National Preparedness Program, aiming at improving the coordination among experts and agencies involved in wildfire management in Spain, through joint field exercises, exchanges of experts and the Forest Fire Assessment and Advisory Team (FAST). She also coordinates the Incident Management System and Training Certification national working group, and the Integral Prevention Teams (EPRIF) and the Prevention and Analysis Teams (EPAIF), which support regional governments on the territory. At international level, she is in charge of the coordination of Silva Mediterranea working group on forest fires (FAO), and participates actively, in the European Commission´s expert groups on forest fires (DG ENV-JRC; DG ECHO) and the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), along with other international groups and initiatives such as the Global Wildland Fire Network, its Wildland Fire Advisory Group and the Fire Aviation Working Group (UNISDR). She is a member of the International Liaison Committee (ILC) for the International Wildfire Conferences (WILDFIRE).
