Biography

Peter has over 40 years of operational, management and policy experience in natural resources with an emphasis in fire management, system development, policy formation and implementation, national MRV systems, forest, and land management across Africa, Australia, Europe, North America and South America. Peter has been engaged on a wide range of national and international natural resources related activities working for national governments, FAO, the World Bank and in the private sector. His roles have included planning, training and supporting the development of systems for land, resources, and fire management in many countries. His expertise and skill set are heavily focused on institutions and arrangements for forest and land use, with an emphasis on fire related management, planning, policy settings, coherence, and coordination. He has published widely on fire management, roles of responsibilities, laws, and policies for fire management and community-based fire management. Biography

Prof. Ortwin Renn is a retired scientific director at the International Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam (Germany) and a retired professor for environmental sociology and technology assessment at the University of Stuttgart. He also directs the non-profit company DIALOGIK, a research institute for the investigation of communication and participation processes. Renn is Adjunct Professor for “Integrated Risk Analysis” at Stavanger University (Norway), Honorary Professor at the Technical University Munich and Affiliate Professor for “Risk Governance” at Beijing Normal University. His research interests include risk governance (analysis perception, communication), stakeholder and public involvement in environmental decision making, transformation processes in economics, politics and society and sustainable development. Ortwin Renn has a doctoral degree in social psychology from the University of Cologne. His career includes teaching and research positions at Clark University (Worcester, USA), the Swiss Institute of Technology (Zuerich) and the Center of Technology Assessment (Stuttgart). His honours include the National Cross of Merit Order, honorary doctorates from the Swiss Institute of Technology and the Midsweden University, the “Outstanding Research Award” of the Society for Integrated Disaster and Risk Management (IDRiM) and the “Distinguished Achievement Award” of the Society for Risk Analysis (SRA). In 2019, he was awarded the Order of Merit from the State of Baden-Württemberg for special achievements in scientific policy advice. Renn is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences “Leopoldina”, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences (Berlin), and of the Board of Directors of the German National Academy of Technology and Engineering (Acatech). He is a member of the Federal Government's "Climate Change" research platform and chairs the Sustainability Council of the State of Brandenburg. In 2011 he served on the Ethics Commission "The Future of Energy" appointed by Chancellor Angela Merkel. Until 2014, he was a member of the "Science and Technology Advisory Council", an advisory body for EU Commission’s President Jose Manuel Barroso. Renn has published more than 30 monographs and over 250 peer reviewed articles. His most prominent English publication is the book “Risk Governance. Coping with Uncertainty in a Complex World (London: Earthscan 2008).

Biography

Dr. Toddi Steelman is the Stanback Dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University. She is best known as a wildland fire expert and has brought her expertise to bear in a variety of venues including the Royal Society (UK), National Academy of Sciences (US) and as an invited keynote speaker in Canada, Germany, Australia and the United States. She a past-President of the International Association of Wildland Fire. Her research agenda has focused on understanding community responses to wildfire, wildland fire communication and how communities and agencies interact for more effective wildfire management on large, interjurisdictionally complex wildfires. The author of four books, Steelman has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, as well as opinion and editorial pieces in Nature, the Globe and Mail, The Hill and the Los Angeles Times.

Biography

Tiago M. Oliveira (Porto-1969) is an Expert in forest fire risk governance and management. His political, managerial, and operational experience is grounded on 25 years of operation and research activities as incident commander, aerial coordinator, hotshot crew or regular wildland firefighter. He holds a PhD in Forest Engineering and Natural Resources at University of Lisbon. In the aftermath of 2017 wildfires he was appointed by the Prime-Minister to lead the Installation of the Integrated Rural Fire Management System. Since January 2019, he is the Chairman of the Board of the Portuguese Agency for Integrated Rural Fire Management assuring the strategical coordination of the system (https://www.agif.pt/en). Former Head of the Department of Innovation and Forestry Development (2016-2017) and Forest Risk Manager (2008-2016) at The Navigator Company, where he covered fire prevention and suppression operational programs (www.afocelca.com) and R&D projects. Assistant Lecturer at MedFor Master (2013-2017) and advisor of XV and XVII Portuguese Governments (2004). Head of Inventory and GIS unit (1998-2003) and Assistant Research (1994-1998) at National Geographic Agency. Besides several communications and papers he developed his personal and professional skills in strategy, planning, risk analysis, forest investment, change management, communication, project management, natural resource survey, GIS and remote sensing.
